NIAID Announces Call for Abstracts on Infectious Diseases in the MENA Region

Scientists are invited to submit abstracts for possible presentation at an NIAID-supported conference addressing high-priority infectious diseases in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The conference will focus on vector-borne and zoonotic diseases including West Nile virus, Rift Valley fever, sandfly fever, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, Alkhumra hemorrhagic fever, H5N1 avian influenza, and Q fever.

The deadline for abstract submission is Friday, April 13, 2012. Abstracts are limited to 300 words and must be in English. Only one submission per person is allowed.

NIAID, a part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) has partnered with the U.S. Department of State Bioengagement Program, Defence Science and Technology of Porton Down, UK, and Koç University, Istanbul, to convene this interdisciplinary research conference.

This interdisciplinary research conference is supported by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the National Institutes of Health (NIH/NIAID), United States Department of Health and Human Services in partnership with the U.S. Department of State, Bioengagement Program (DOS/BEP), Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl), Porton Down/UK, and Koç University, Istanbul.
During the meeting, scientists from the United States, Europe and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) will present their research and discuss opportunities for scientific cooperation. The focus will be on vector-borne and zoonotic diseases of human importance in MENA and of scientific interest to U.S. and European Scientists, including: West Nile fever, Rift Valley fever, sandfly fever, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF), Alkhumra hemorrhagic fever, H5N1 avian influenza, and Q fever (caused by Coxiella burnetii).

All abstracts must be in English. There is a 300 word limit.

Abstracts submission for the conference has now closed



Conference participants will be selected based on a review of submitted abstracts. Selected participants may be invited to make an oral or poster presentation. Selected participants will be notified by email and invited to register by April 27, 2012.
Limited funding support may be available for some selected participants and the conference may be followed by an opportunity for participants to apply for small collaborative research grants.
