CDC Highlights
Nearly 1 in 5 adolescents aged 12 to 18 years, and 1 in 4 young adults aged 19 to 34 years are living with prediabetes, according to a new CDC study published in JAMA Pediatrics. There are several ways state and local organizations can create a supportive environment to promote healthy weight and help prevent diabetes related to obesity. States and communities can work with early care and education centers and schools to improve healthy food and beverage offerings and opportunities for physical activity for children. Your Guide to Using the School Health Index (SHI) includes information and resources for district and school staff who are familiar with the SHI and who are charged with completing the assessment. Included in this guide are information, materials, and resources on how to implement the SHI in schools, as well as a section for facilitating groups to use for conducting trainings, workshops, or presentations on the SHI.
- Using data from the 2014 School Health Policies and Practices Study, the article “Characteristics Associated With School Health Services for the Management of Chronic Health Conditions” published in The Journal of School Nursing, found that approximately 57.2% of schools identified students with health needs, and used a school-based management system to track student health needs to help provide case management and referral services for students with chronic health conditions.
- The recent article, “Concussion and Academic Impairment Among U.S. High School Students” in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine examines how concussions may adversely affect students’ ability to learn and impair academic achievement in educational settings.
