Declines in Dietary Quality Begin by 1 Year of Age

Declines in dietary quality begin as early as 1 year of age, especially among those who live in households with lower education levels and incomes less than the poverty level. This conclusion is based on a national survey of parents who were asked about their child’s food consumption.

When babies become toddlers, they have more influence on what they eat, which could impact the quality of their diets. In addition, families may shift from foods or beverages designed specifically for babies to foods that are more similar to the family diet. Read more in this October 2019 journal article.
Tips for picky eaters
Dietary quality may change because children are picky eaters. Encourage parents and caregivers to see these six approaches to encourage children to try new foods. Success may require repeated attempts.
