FDA Approves Therapy to Treat Ataxia in Patients with Ataxia-Telangiectasia, a Rare Genetic Disorder

https://www.fda.gov/drugs/news-events-human-drugs/fda-approves-therapy-treat-ataxia-patients-ataxia-telangiectasia-rare-genetic-disorder?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Aqneursa (levacetylleucine) to treat ataxia in adults and children with ataxia-telangiectasia weighing at least 15 kg (about 33 pounds). Aqneursa was previously approved in 2024 to treat the neurological symptoms of Niemann-Pick disease type C, another rare neurological condition. Ataxia-telangiectasia is a rare genetic disorder that causes progressive loss of balance, coordination, and movement, typically beginning in early childhood. Until now, there were no approved treatments for its neurological symptoms. Aqneursa is taken by mouth, with or without food, at a dose based on the patient's body weight. Its effectiveness was demonstrated in a clinical trial of 73 patients, in which Aqneursa-treated patients showed meaningful improvement in measures of walking, balance, and speech compared to patients receiving placebo.

Mobile application-based interventions were associated with improved QOL but telephone follow-ups were n...

Standing Up More May Not Cut Risk for Cancer Death Will Pass

https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/standing-more-may-not-cut-risk-cancer-death-2026a1000ytx?src= Standing up is not enough. Taking breaks from long stretches of sitting is not, on its own, associated with a lower risk of dying from cancer, but replacing that sitting time with physical activity is, an accelerometer study of more than 91,000 adults showed. Over more than a decade of follow-up, cancer death occurred in 2.8% of participants in the highest quartile of daily sedentary time compared with 1.3% in the lowest quartile, reported senior author Frederick K. Ho, PhD, of the University of Glasgow, Glasgow, Scotland. However, a model suggested that trading an hour of prolonged sitting for an hour of interrupted sitting was not associated with lower cancer mortality.

Long-Term Results Favor Acalabrutinib Combo in Mantle Cell Lymphoma Nancy A. Melville

https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/long-term-results-favor-acalabrutinib-combo-mantle-cell-2026a1000yte?src= The addition of the Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitor acalabrutinib to bendamustine and rituximab (BR) to frontline treatment for mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) significantly reduces the risk for disease progression or death compared with BR alone. The results of the long-term analysis of the phase 3 ECHO also show greater benefits with the concurrent combination of the three-drug regimen than with the sequential addition of acalabrutinib to BR. Grade 3 or higher adverse event rates were high in both groups.
