The Paris Agreement came into force in 2016, a watershed in collective international action on climate change. That year also saw the creation of the Lancet Countdown on health and climate change, established to track the health effects of climate change and climate action. The past 10 years may have brought disheartening setbacks in climate policy, but there have also been huge advances in the understanding of and attitudes towards climate change.
Health has become a key aspect of climate policy. COP28 had the first official Health Day, elevating health in climate negotiations, and climate laws referencing health rose sharply after 2016. The Countdown has helped to drive that change, growing into a network of regional centres across Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, Oceania, and Small Island Developing States that produces locally relevant indicators and evidence that have shaped policy and held governments to account. Advances in science have better illuminated the relationships between climate and health, including the adverse impacts of heat, drought, extreme rainfall, and infectious diseases such as dengue and cholera.
