The Lancet's COVID-19 Resource Centre: the first Article to develop and validate classification criteria to define COVID-19-specific hyperinflammation, and more.

New COVID-19 Content is Now Available

Dear Victor Norberto,

New this week: Some patients with COVID-19 develop a COVID-19-associated hyperinflammatory syndrome that has similarities with other hyperinflammatory disorders. An Article published in The Lancet Rheumatology is the first to develop and validate classification criteria to define COVID-19-specific hyperinflammation. The authors compared published clinical data for COVID-19 with clinical features of other hyperinflammatory or cytokine storm syndromes. Based on a framework of conserved clinical characteristics, they developed a six-criterion additive scale for COVID-19-specific hyperinflammation syndrome (cHIS score), before validating the association of the cHIS score with in-hospital mortality and need for mechanical ventilation in 299 in-patients with COVID-19. Though independent validation is needed, the authors suggest that the cHIS scale may help define target patient populations for clinical trials and potentially for treatment with immunomodulatory therapies. Read the Article here.

We hope you find the Resource Centre on COVID-19 to be informative.

Yours sincerely,
