Trump says coronavirus task force will continue ‘indefinitely,’ shift focus to vaccines, reopening the nation

President Trump on Wednesday said the coronavirus task force would continue “indefinitely” following indications from his administration that officials were considering winding the group down. However, the president said, the task force would shift its focus to vaccines and safely reopening the country.

The World Health Organization is being accused of ignoring its own guidelines put in place after the SARS outbreak in the early 2000s, which call for the organization to investigate reports of potential new coronavirus cases from the start to prevent any chance of a pandemic.

Private employers slashed 20.2 million jobs in April as the coronavirus-induced lockdown ravaged the U.S. economy, according to the ADP National Employment Report released Wednesday. It was the largest decline on record since the survey started in 2002.

The head of a group that represents thousands of New York City landlords pushed back against a growing nationwide push to cancel rent payments amid the coronavirus pandemic, saying the rent strikes will “create an economic domino effect” and asking local and federal government officials to intervene.

And the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is buying $470 million worth of meat, dairy, produce and seafood from American farmers and donating it to food banks this summer. Millions of Americans are experiencing food insecurities during the pandemic, while farmers struggle with surplus as restaurants and other food service entities remain closed.
