Call for papers: The impact of genomics on precision public health

The emergence of pathogen and human genome sequencing in clinical and public health practice provides opportunities and challenges for using genomics to improve population health. Human and pathogen genomics are at the leading edge of the application of new technologies to public health practice. Research efforts in this area are contributing to a new era of 'precision public health', an emerging multidisciplinary field that uses genomics, other big data and artificial intelligence to predict risk and outcomes, and to improve population health. Such studies are advancing our understanding of how to use pathogen and human genomics in public health approaches to prevent and control diseases, as well as to enhance health promotion and reduce health disparities.

To capture advances in this growing area, Genome Medicine is pleased to announce a call for papers for our upcoming special issue on ‘The impact of genomics on precision public health', guest edited by Dr Muin Khoury from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and by Dr Kathryn Holt from Monash University and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

We are now inviting the submission of Research, Method, Software, Database and Guideline manuscripts of outstanding interest covering the breadth of public health applications of human and pathogen genomics including:

Rare genetic variation
Polygenic risk scores
Large-scale association studies (GWAS, TWAS, EWAS, etc.)
Gene-environment interaction
Mendelian randomization
Applications of artificial intelligence
Rare and common chronic diseases (including cancer, metabolic, cardiovascular and neurological diseases)
Reproductive health and newborn screening
Infectious disease monitoring, control and prevention
Pathogen detection and diagnostics
Pathogen surveillance, epidemiology and evolution (including influenza, HIV, tuberculosis and other bacterial and parasitic diseases)
Foodborne disease outbreaks
Sexually transmitted infections
Viral outbreaks including the COVID-19 pandemic
Antimicrobial resistance
Hospital and healthcare associated infections
Vaccine development and surveillance
