Yoga: What You Need To Know

If you’re thinking of trying yoga, you may have questions about whether it’s safe for you.

In general, yoga is considered a safe form of physical activity for healthy people when performed properly, under the guidance of a qualified instructor. However, it’s possible to get injured while doing yoga, just as it’s possible to get injured when doing other types of physical activity. The most common injuries associated with yoga are sprains and strains.

To reduce your chances of getting hurt while doing yoga:
  • Learn yoga from a qualified instructor.
  • If you’re new to yoga, avoid advanced practices such as headstands, shoulder stands, the lotus position, and forceful breathing.
  • Be aware that hot yoga has special risks related to overheating and dehydration.
Pregnant women, older adults, and people with health conditions should talk with their health care providers and the yoga instructor about their special needs.
