National Institute of Mental Health Reddit "Ask Me Anything" Event

NIH and Reddit "Ask me Anything" Suicide Forum

In recognition of National Suicide Prevention Month in September, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is participating in a Reddit "Ask Me Anything" (AMA) event on Thursday, September 5, 2019. NIMH's suicide prevention expert, Dr. Jane Pearson will answer questions from the public about how NIMH-supported research is helping save lives and reduce the rising suicide rate.

U.S. Department of Labor Invites Stakeholders to an Online Dialogue on Supporting Nursing Mothers in the Workplace

WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Department of Labor is hosting an online dialogue to help employers and nursing mothers understand their rights and responsibilities under the law. The Supporting Nursing Mothers in the Workplace Online Dialogue will also solicit best practices to educate nursing mothers about key protections of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Employers, nursing mothers, state and local policymakers, and other interested people can participate through Friday, August 23, 2019.
“This dialogue seeks feedback from key stakeholders who help nursing mothers - from employers and employer groups, to nursing mother groups, to state and local policymakers,” said Cheryl Stanton, Administrator of the Wage and Hour Division. “It’s an important discussion that will allow the Wage and Hour Division to receive valuable feedback on the needs of nursing mothers in the workplace.”
This online dialogue is hosted by the Department’s Office of Compliance Initiatives (OCI) in partnership with the Wage and Hour DivisionWomen’s Bureau, and the Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP). The dialogue is facilitated through ODEP’s ePolicyWorks initiative. Please register to participate.
OCI is part of the Department’s Office of the Assistant Secretary for Policy. It aims to foster a compliance assistance culture within the Department, complement its enforcement efforts, and improve compliance assistance outreach. Through Worker.govand Employer.gov, OCI provides information about worker rights and employer responsibilities.

New CDC Web Page: #HowIRecommend Vaccination Video Series
The CDC has launched a new web page for the #HowIRecommend video series. The video series feature short peer-to-peer videos from practicing clinicians explaining the importance of vaccination, how to effectively address questions about vaccine safety and effectiveness, and how clinicians routinely recommend same day vaccination to their patients. Videos can be viewed by clinician type (e.g., family physicians, OB-GYNs, nurses, and pharmacists), topic, and patient group (e.g., childhood, adolescent, adult, and maternal).

Digital Toolkit: August 2019 National Immunization Awareness Month
The NIAM 2019 Digital Toolkit includes a toolkit for communicating with healthcare professionals to encourage them to make an effective vaccine recommendation, a toolkit for communicating with parents and patients on the importance of vaccination, and immunization social media content.

HRSA's Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) will host Grand Challenges Demo Days September 12-13. Through the Grand Challenges, MCHB solicited innovative ideas to solve critical maternal and child health problems using technology. Challenge areas of focus are:
The top entries from Phase 1 of the four Challenges each won a share of a $100,000 prize. Now these Phase 1 winners are coming to HRSA to demonstrate their innovations to a panel of judges and compete for a share of a $125,000 prize per Challenge and an opportunity to move to the third and final phase of the competitions. Final winners can win up to $150,000. Along the way, MCHB is inspiring creative thinking, collaboration and problem solving among IT designers, engineers, startups, as well as experts in maternal and child health. Mindfulness-Oriented Recovery Enhancement (MORE) May Reduce Opioid Cravings and Chronic Pain

Results from a new study suggest mindfulness-oriented recovery enhancement (MORE)—an integrative behavioral group therapy that involves training in mindfulness, reappraisal, and savoring skills—may be a useful nondrug complementary treatment for people with opioid use disorder and chronic pain in methadone maintenance therapy. The Stage 1 pilot study, which included 30 participants with opioid use disorder and chronic pain, was funded by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH). It was published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence.  Read the full spotlight
