Fenugreek

Background

Fenugreek is an herb that’s used in the spice blend garam masala and to flavor imitation maple syrup. It’s been used as a dietary supplement for diabetes, to stimulate milk production during breastfeeding, and for other health purposes.

How Much Do We Know?

There’s little conclusive evidence about the effects of fenugreek on health conditions.

What Have We Learned?

There’s weak evidence from a few small studies that fenugreek may help lower blood sugar levels in people with diabetes. Some studies suggest—but haven’t proven—that fenugreek may increase milk production in women who are breastfeeding. Overall, there isn’t enough scientific evidence to support the use of fenugreek for any health condition.

What Do We Know About Safety?

Side effects of fenugreek may include diarrhea; a maple-like smell to urine, breast milk, and perspiration; and a worsening of asthma. Don’t take fenugreek if you’re pregnant. There’s little information on the risks of taking fenugreek while breastfeeding.
