Youth violence is a widespread public health problem that negatively affects youth, families, and communities. Homicide is the third leading cause of death for young people ages 10 to 24. Each day, about 13 youth die from homicide and more than 1,300 are treated in emergency departments for violence-related injuries. Despite these staggering statistics, preventing youth violence is possible.
CDC’s National Centers of Excellence in Youth Violence Prevention (also known as YVPCs – and formerly Academic Centers of Excellence in Youth Violence Prevention) are academic-community collaborations that advance the science and practice of youth violence prevention. Through local partnerships, the YVPCs develop, implement, and rigorously evaluate innovative strategies to prevent violence and create safer, healthier family and community environments for youth.
