Tips for organizing caregiving paperwork

One way that caregivers can be a big help is by organizing paperwork. It’s a job that can be done even if you live far away. Getting all of the right information in one place can be a lot of work at first, but once it’s done, many other caregiving tasks will be easier.

Here are some tips to get started:
  • Give yourself plenty of time. If you don’t see the person often, one visit might not be enough to get everything done. Start with the essentials and go from there.
  • Make sure copies of important documents are all in one place. Legal paperwork, like a will or durable power of attorney, should be accessible in an emergency.
  • Use this time to ask about future care plans. If the person has a living will, go over their healthcare preferences with them in case they are ever seriously ill and unable to make decisions on their own.
