Report: Drug-resistant Typhoid,
U.S. Travelers, and Pakistan

An ongoing outbreak of extensively drug-resistant (XDR) typhoid fever in Pakistan is not responding to most antibiotics used to treat typhoid fever. From 2016 through 2018, typhoid fever was diagnosed in 29 U.S. patients who had recently traveled to or from Pakistan. Five of these patients were children who had XDR typhoid fever, which can be very difficult to treat. Travelers to South Asia, including Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh, should take precautions to protect themselves from typhoid fever. Visit your doctor or a travel clinic at least 2 weeks before travel to get a typhoid fever vaccine and follow safe food and water guidelinesduring travel. Read the report.
