Changes to This Summary (12/01/16)
The PDQ cancer information summaries are reviewed regularly and updated as new information becomes available. This section describes the latest changes made to this summary as of the date above.
Added text to state that a decline in early-stage prostate cancer incidence rates from 2011 to 2012 in men aged 50 years and older persisted through 2013 in Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) registries following the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommendations against routine PSA testing of all men, which were published in 2012. Whether this pattern will lead to an increase in diagnosis of distant-stage disease and prostate cancer mortality is not yet known and will require long-term follow-up (cited Jemal et al. as reference 2).
This summary is written and maintained by the PDQ Screening and Prevention Editorial Board, which is editorially independent of NCI. The summary reflects an independent review of the literature and does not represent a policy statement of NCI or NIH. More information about summary policies and the role of the PDQ Editorial Boards in maintaining the PDQ summaries can be found on the About This PDQ Summary and PDQ® - NCI's Comprehensive Cancer Database pages.
