How Do Osteoclasts Develop?
NIAID scientists describe new methods of studying osteoclasts—immune cells that degrade bone. Osteoclasts contribute to arthritis and osteoporosis, so understanding how they form is essential for developing new therapeutic strategies.
Using the new techniques, researchers identified a key protein, called Vdac, required for the cells to mature. The researchers uploaded their data to a public repository, ProteomeXchange, for reuse by other groups, reinforcing collaboration, transparency, and reproducibility in scientific research.
