PHIL Image 17732

ID#:17732
Description:This photograph was taken in the West African nation
of Nigeria, in the country’s largest city of Lagos, and
depicts what was known as “The Old Isolation Ward”,
which had been labeled “Ward B” used to house male
patients infected with the Ebola virus, and ill with Ebola
hemorrhagic fever (Ebola HF). In this particular scene,
a number of World Health Organization (WHO) workers
were gearing up to enter the isolation ward having donned
their personal protective equipment (PPE), protecting
them from Ebola virus contamination. This was a “hot zone”,
which is an area where patients are being treated, and
where occupants are at highest risk of being infected.
See PHIL 17722 and 17729, for images showing the interior
of a new, more modern isolation ward implemented during
the 2014 Ebola HF outbreak across Guinea, northern Liberia,
Sierra Leone, and Nigeria.
Ebola hemorrhagic fever (Ebola HF) is one of numerous

Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers. It is a severe, often fatal disease

in humans and nonhuman primates (such as monkeys,

gorillas, and chimpanzees).

Ebola HF is caused by infection with a virus of the family Filoviridae,

genus Ebolavirus. When infection occurs, symptoms usually

begin abruptly. The first Ebolavirus species was discovered in

1976 in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo near

the Ebola River. Since then, outbreaks have appeared sporadically.
