We are pleased to present the May session of CDC’s Public Health Grand Rounds, “The 25th Anniversary of the Discovery of the Hepatitis C Virus: Looking Back to Look Forward.” This session will be available via live webcast from CDC headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia on Tuesday, June 17, at 1 p.m. (EDT) athttp://www.cdc.gov/cdcgrandrounds.

Twenty-five years ago, CDC played a pivotal role in the discovery of the virus that causes hepatitis C. After the isolation of HCV, implementation of screening of blood products and organs for donation led to a decrease in rates of HCV infection between 1990 and 2009. In spite of these successes, HCV still remains a serious threat, both domestically and abroad. HCV remains the most common chronic blood borne infection in the United States, affecting approximately 3.9 million individuals. However up to 50% of HCV-infected persons are unaware of their infection. Globally, there are 180 million people who are chronically infected with the virus, and 3–4 million new infections occur every year.

Recent therapeutic advances hold the potential to halt the progression of HCV infection and disease. While HCV-infected persons can be effectively treated, more effort is needed to screen, diagnose, treat, and provide continuity of care. This session of Public Health Grand Rounds will discuss how new screening guidelines, testing methods, and therapeutic advances will provide us with an opportunity to improve individual outcomes and to eventually eliminate HCV infection.

Future Grand Rounds topics include Public Health Approaches to Reduce U.S. Infant Mortality, as an encore presentation, and Infertility: a Public Health Issue.

Those who attend PHGR either in person, Envision, IPTV, or “web on demand” and who wish to receive continuing education must complete the online seminar evaluation. Thirty days from the initial seminar the course number will change to WD2346 and will be available for continuing education until February 18, 2016.  The course code for PHGR is PHGR10.

Target Audience: Physicians, nurses, epidemiologists, pharmacists, veterinarians, certified health education specialists, laboratorians, others

Objectives:

  1. List key measures of burden of disease involving morbidity, mortality, and/or cost.
  2. Describe evidence-based preventive interventions and the status of their implementations.
  3. Identify one key prevention science research gap.
  4. Name one key indicator by which progress and meeting prevention goals is measured.

CE certificates can be printed from your computer immediately upon completion of your online evaluation. A cumulative transcript of all CDC/ATSDR CE’s obtained through the TCE Online System will be maintained for each user. We hope that this will assist CDC staff and other public health professionals to fulfill the requirements for their professional licenses and certificates.
