Join us today for the September session of CDC’s Public Health Grand Rounds, “Explaining the Unexplained – Discovering New Diseases Using Advanced Detection Tools.” This session will be available via live webcast from CDC headquarters today Tuesday, September 18 at 1 p.m. (EDT) at www.cdc.gov/about/grand-rounds. The webcast link is only active during the date and time of the session, but all sessions are archived for future viewing.

This exciting session of Grand Rounds focuses on rapid identification of emerging infectious diseases.  As our world increases in interconnectivity of both technology and people, the rapid identification of emerging infectious diseases becomes more important for disease treatment, control, and prevention.

Pathologists and medical examiners are often among the first healthcare workers to encounter infectious disease outbreaks. This session demonstrates their critical role in surveillance for and rapid response to emerging infectious diseases.  CDC plays an ongoing role in the laboratory diagnosis of infectious illnesses, discovery of new agents, and it collaborates 24/7 with state, local, and international partners in order to track emerging pathogens to explain the unexplained.

Future Grand Rounds topics include infant mortality reduction, injection safety, disability, and venous thromboembolism. Email your questions about this topic before or during the session.

Target Audience: Physicians, nurses, epidemiologists, pharmacists, veterinarians, certified health education specialists, laboratorians, others

Objectives:

  1. List key measures of burden of disease involving morbidity, mortality, and/or cost.
  2. Describe evidence-based preventive interventions and the status of their implementations.
  3. Identify one key prevention science research gap.
  4. Name one key indicator by which progress and meeting prevention goals is measured.

CE certificates can be printed from your computer immediately upon completion of your online evaluation.  A cumulative transcript of all CDC/ATSDR CE’s obtained through the TCE Online System will be maintained for each user.  We hope that this will assist CDC staff and other public health professionals to fulfill the requirements for their professional licenses and certificates.
