Last week, several HIV/AIDS researchers working at and supported by NIAID attended the International AIDS Society (IAS) Conference 2011 in Rome, Italy. Among the presenters were NIAID Director Anthony Fauci, M.D., and Vaccine Research Center Director Gary Nabel, M.D., Ph.D. Their talks included:
Monday, July 18: The Changing Face of HIV Vaccine Research
In his opening plenary session, Dr. Nabel discussed what we have learned from HIV vaccine clinical trials thus far, the obstacles to developing an effective HIV vaccine, and promising new developments in AIDS vaccine research. He concludes by discussing the potential directions of future HIV vaccine research.

Monday, July 18: 30 Years of HIV/AIDS
In this presentation, Dr. Fauci described the challenges and successes that have marked the 30 years since the first reported cases of HIV/AIDS in 1981. Since then, we have had many advances in understanding HIV and AIDS disease, developing effective treatments, and using a variety of tools to prevent new cases.

Wednesday, July 20: Treatment as Prevention
In this short talk, Dr. Fauci discusses recent clinical trials in which microbicides and antiretrovirals were successfully used to prevent HIV/AIDS, and the implications of these results.
