Harbor House: Orange County Center Against Domestic Violence



I recently took a tour of Harbor House of Central Florida, a place where domestic violence survivors can go when they have left an abusive relationship. According to Harbor House’s director, Carol Wicke, 48-percent of abused women delay leaving an abusive relationship because they don’t have a safe place for their pets; 88-percent of the pets are also abused by the abusive partner, and 57-percent have had a pet killed by their abuser. Harbor House is partnering with Orange County Animal Services to build the first Pet and Women’s Shelter (PAWS) certified kennel in Central Florida that will house the pets of domestic violence survivors. They are raising funds to cover their costs, and anyone wanting to help can create a tile with a picture of their pet on it by contributing $100 or more.
