The metaphysics of fine-tuning the universe

Why do the fundamental laws and constants of the universe possess precisely the values that allow for the existence of stars, planets, complex chemistry, and, ultimately, life? The so-called “fine-tuning of the universe” is one of the great questions that contemporary cosmology has yet to solve: slight variations in certain physical parameters would have produced a radically different cosmos, incompatible with life. From Fred Hoyle’s astonishing prediction of carbon formation to current multiverse hypotheses, science has sought to explain this extraordinary precision. Yet this issue transcends the limits of physics and opens an inevitably metaphysical question: is fine-tuning a product of chance, a consequence of still unknown laws, or an indication of purpose and intelligence?
