Get the Facts About Blood Clots!

This week, we are kicking off DVT Awareness Month by sharing general information and resources about blood clots.

Get the Facts About Blood Clots!

  • DVT and PE are serious and often underdiagnosed medical conditions that can be prevented. Together, DVT and PE are known as venous thromboembolism, or VTE.
  • VTE affects as many as 900,000 Americans each year.
  • As many as 100,000 people die of blood clots each year.
  • PE is a leading cause of death in women during pregnancy and up to 3 months after having a baby.
  • 1 in 4 people who have a PE die suddenly.
  • Blood clots are a leading cause of death in people with cancer, after the cancer itself.
  • 3 in 10 people who have a blood clot will have another blood clot within 10 years.
  • Up to half of people who have a DVT will have a long-term complication called post-thrombotic syndrome. This is caused by the damage the blood clot did to the valves in the deep vein in which the blood clot occurred.
  • Anyone can have a DVT; however, certain factors can increase the chance of having this condition. The chance increases even more for someone who has more than one of these factors at the same time.
  • Blood clots cost the United States up to $10 billion each year in healthcare costs.
  • Treatment of blood clots can cost as much as $15,000-$20,000 per person, and often results in readmission to the hospital.
