Coronavirus cases top 200,000 worldwide, death toll passes 8,000

The coronavirus has reached a grim milestone: The total number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus worldwide has now surpassed 200,000 while the death toll has topped 8,000, according to Johns Hopkins University.

The Johns Hopkins Center for Systems Science and Engineering's latest online tally showed 201,436 cumulative cases, with 82,032 listed as recovered; 8,0006 deaths were recorded. The countries with the most confirmed cases were China, Italy, Iran, Spain and Germany. The countries with the most confirmed deaths were China, Italy, Iran, Spain and France.

Meanwhile, President Trump on Wednesday announced that the U.S. and Canada are closing their shared border to non-essential traffic as part of the effort to tackle the coronavirus pandemic. In addition, the war of words between the Trump administration and China over the origin of coronavirus has escalated as Trump is going out of his way to call it the "Chinese Virus" and China has embarked on a propaganda campaign to shift blame for the pandemic away from its handling of the crisis.

U.S. equity markets plunged Wednesday, pushing the Dow Jones Industrial Average briefly below 20,000. And Iran reported a 15 percent spike in its coronavirus death toll overnight Tuesday -- the country’s single biggest 24-hour rise since officials first acknowledged COVID-19 cases in mid-February.
