When Should You Get an A1C Test?

When Should You Get an A1C Test?

The A1C test measures average blood sugar over the last 3 months. It’s used for two main reasons:
  • To diagnose prediabetes and diabetes (other tests may be used instead).
  • To help people with diabetes manage their condition.
If you have diabetes, you’ll need to have an A1C test at least twice a year, more often if your medicine changes or you’re managing other health conditions.

If you could have prediabetes or type 2 diabetes—factors include being overweight and not being physically active—you should get an A1C test if you haven’t already. Then you and your doctor can talk about what your result means and any next steps you should take to stay healthy.
