Welcome to Field Notes, a new series from CDC’s Center for State, Tribal, Local, and Territorial Support! Field Notes spotlights success and innovation at state, tribal, local, and territorial health agencies.
Every year, at least two million people in the United States get an antibiotic-resistant infection, and at least 23,000 of them die as a result. To improve how South Carolina’s healthcare facilities use antibiotics, the state’s Department of Health and Environmental Control established the Antimicrobial Stewardship Collaborative of South Carolina (ASC-SC), in partnership with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and College of Pharmacy. Under the Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity cooperative agreement from CDC, the collaborative—
- Offers free on-site, telephone, and electronic consultation (currently to 44 acute care hospitals and 12 long-term care facilities)
- Leads South Carolina’s effort to generate a statewide antibiogram, which documents the susceptibility of pathogens to various antibiotics
- Develops guidelines to improve prescribing practices for several specific syndromes
- Holds regional and statewide educational meetings, live webinars, and in-person trainings
ASC-SC also analyzes data on local antibiotic use and rates of Clostridium difficile infections.
