Do you need to lose weight for health purposes? If so, you’re not alone. More than two-thirds of adults and one-third of children in the United States are overweight or obese.

If you’re struggling with your weight, a healthy eating plan and regular physical activity may help you lose weight and keep it off. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases has tips on how to choose a safe and successful weight-loss program.

People sometimes ask whether complementary health approaches can help with weight loss. For some mind and body approaches, the answer may be yes. For example, research indicates that yoga and meditation, particularly mindful eating, may help when used along with other weight-loss interventions.

On the other hand, dietary supplements, such as green tea extracts, Chinese herbs, and bitter orange, have not been shown to be effective for weight loss, and they may even have dangerous side effects. Many dietary supplements marketed for weight loss have not been tested for safety. Also, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has found that some weight-loss products sold as dietary supplements are tainted with prescription drug ingredients.
