New cholera vaccine available for US travelers

A cholera vaccine is now available in the United States. Vaxchora prevents severe diarrhea caused by the most common type of cholera bacteria. CDC recommends adults traveling to areas with active cholera transmission get the vaccine, which is taken orally, 10 days before traveling.

Check CDC’s Travel Health Notices website to determine if the area you are traveling to has active cholera transmission. Avoiding unsafe food and water and regularly washing hands can also prevent cholera infection. The vaccine is not licensed for children.
