Drug Protects Insulin-Producing Cells in Type 1 Diabetes

Results from an NIAID-sponsored clinical trial suggest that the drug alefacept helps preserve function of insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells in people with newly diagnosed Type 1 diabetes. Alefacept treatment was safe, and the clinical benefits persisted for more than one year after treatment stopped.
