Exploring the Role of the Microbiome

in Vaccine-induced Immunity

HIV-infected T cell

Researchers from NIAID and Duke Medicine uncover why a candidate HIV vaccine did not work well. The candidate vaccine stimulated antibodies that recognized HIV as well as microbes commonly found in the intestinal tract, part of the body’s microbiome, but these antibodies were not protective against HIV.

Understanding how the microbiome influences the effectiveness of vaccine-induced immunity will inform ongoing vaccine research efforts against HIV and other infectious diseases.
