The AntiConvulsant Syndromes are caused when AntiEpileptic medications affect the Fetus used during pregnancy.
AntiConvulsant medication is used not only for epilepsy, but migraine, pain, mental health problems and bipolar disorder.
Fetal AntiConvulsant Syndromes or FACS for short, is a complex syndrome with a number of disabilities; ranging from Congenital abnormalities, called malformations, are conditions that are present at birth (congenital). There are numerous variations of congenital malformations of the bone and soft tissue of the head and spine, including neural tube defects such as spina bifida and heart. Cognitive (Cognitive delay usually refers to a developmental delays. That means that an individuals cognitive abilities do not match the expectations of other children of the same age group) problems such as autism, dyslexia etc. communication problems such as language delay and mental health problems and low IQ. If one child has FACS within a family unit, then there will be a 55% likelihood that other siblings will be too.
