Outbreak of Cryptosporidiosis Among Responders to a Rollover of a Truck Carrying Calves — Kansas, April 2013 

In April 2013, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment was notified of two cases of cryptosporidiosis among emergency responders to a tractor-trailer rollover. The truck was carrying approximately 350 preweaned Holstein calves. This report describes the outbreak investigation that followed. This outbreak is the first reported instance of both law enforcement and volunteer emergency responders contracting cryptosporidiosis, with transmission of Cryptosporidium attributed solely to direct contact with animals and their feces.

Updated Preparedness and Response Framework for Influenza Pandemics 

CDC has updated its framework to describe influenza pandemic progression using six intervals (two prepandemic and four pandemic intervals) and eight domains. This updated framework can be used for influenza pandemic planning and has been aligned with the pandemic phases restructured in 2013 by the World Health Organization.

HIV Risk, Prevention, and Testing Behaviors Among Heterosexuals at Increased Risk for HIV Infection — National HIV Behavioral Surveillance System, 21 U.S. Cities, 2010

Heterosexual sex is the second most common route of transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in the United States. The National HIV Behavioral Surveillance System (NHBS) collects HIV prevalence and risk behavior data from three populations at high risk for HIV infection: men who have sex with men, injecting drug users, and heterosexuals at increased risk for HIV infection. This report summarizes data from the second NHBS data collection cycle among heterosexuals at increased risk for HIV, which was conducted during June–December 2010.

Summary of Notifiable Diseases — United States, 2012 

Health-care providers in the United States are required to report certain infectious diseases to a specified state or local authority. A disease is designated as notifiable if timely information about individual cases is considered necessary for prevention and control of the disease. Each year, CDC publishes a summary of the cases of notifiable disease reported for the most recent year for which data is available. This report presents a summary of notifiable diseases for 2012.

This MMWR Supplement presents data related to disease patterns across the United States and describes recent national trends in health status. Although the United States has made overall progress in improving public health and increasing life expectancy, progress has been slow, and in some aspects of health, change has not occurred or trends are not favorable.
