Sometimes data seem straightforward but can be misleading. I am referring to the data recently published by Eurostat on the availability of equipment and women’s participation in mammography screening within the target age group. According to the bar chart comparing screening rates in 2019 with those in 2024 across EU countries (plus Switzerland, Iceland, and Norway), Italy shows a sharp decline. This negative trend is shared by ten other countries, including Netherlands, France, Ireland, and especially Malta, where the decline can be described as a veritable collapse — from a rate nearing 70% in 2019 to less than 50% in 2024.
