The Changing Needs of a Cell: No Membrane? No Problem!

Along with membrane-bound lipid droplets, cells contain many liquid droplets (one type of liquid surrounded by a liquid of different density) with specialized compositions and functions that lack membranes. Because these “membrane-less organelles” aren’t confined, they can come together in response to chemical signals and perform critical functions faster than other organelles can.
