SPAN-1807 | DNPAO | CDC

SPAN-1807 | DNPAO | CDC

The Insider. News and Updates from CDC's  Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity

Dr. Ruth Petersen

Happy fall to all. It has been an exciting time for DNPAO. One of our big undertakings this year was the National Training in Atlanta in May. Nearly 700 attendees from across the United States participated in the training including recipients of the State Physical Activity and Nutrition Program (SPAN-1807), the High Obesity Program (HOP-1809), the Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH-1813) program, partners, and DNPAO staff. Participants in the new DNPAO Ambassador Program also attended the National Training. As CDC was not able to fund all 50 states or the District of Columbia, DNPAO launched this program for those states that are not current recipients of SPAN so that they may directly benefit from DNPAO technical assistance and resources. All attendees had access to 6 plenary sessions, 40 breakout sessions, more than 100 speakers and approximately 20 exhibitors.
During the week of the National Training, DNPAO also hosted the REACH 20th Anniversary Celebration featuring former Surgeon General David Satcher, MD, PhD. A crowd of more than 1,500 participated in-person or via live webcast for the Celebration. The end of the training week concluded with approximately 250 DNPAO SPAN, REACH, HOP recipients, partners, and DNPAO staff engaging in the evaluation institute, which included 3 plenary sessions and 9 workshops.
The National Training was a wonderful opportunity for us to come together with recipients and partners to lead the charge for a healthy nation. I want to acknowledge the special efforts from the Association of State Public Health Nutritionists (ASPHN) and the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) for doing such an excellent job managing the logistics of the National Training and the REACH 20th Celebration, respectively. We are excited to continue our collective efforts to protect the health of Americans by increasing physical activity and good nutrition and promoting a healthy weight. We thank you, our partners, for all your support along the way!
