CDC - Malaria - Travelers - Choosing a Drug to Prevent Malaria

Malaria Surveillance- US, 2016 MMWR

What to Know: Malaria is a mosquito-borne disease present in 90 countries. About 1,700 cases of malaria are diagnosed in the US each year. Malaria cases diagnosed in the United States are the highest in 40 years, and the vast majority of these cases are in travelers and immigrants returning from countries where malaria transmission occurs. 94% of these cases did not take malaria prevention medication.

How to Counsel Your Patients: Before Travel: Advise them to take all doses of their malaria medication, prevent bug bites, and seek care immediately if they have a fever after their travel.
After Travel: Consider a malaria diagnosis for patients who have traveled to countries with malaria in the past year. More malaria information can be found in our Yellow Book and the Malaria Surveillance MMWR.
