Healthy Volunteers Needed to Study RSV
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common cold virus and also the leading cause of serious and life threatening lung infections in children and the elderly worldwide. Healthy volunteers ages 18-50 years may be eligible to volunteer for an NIAID clinical study about RSV infection. Participants will be compensated for time and may be reimbursed for travel to the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.
If you are healthy, you may be able to help NIAID researchers study RSV infections.
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a contagious virus that causes the common cold. However, RSV can cause serious and life threatening lung infections in children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. In our study, we will give a dose of RSV in the nose and study how a healthy adult responds. What we learn from this study may allow us, and other researchers, to test new medicines and vaccines for RSV.
Who can participate?
You may be eligible if you are
- 18–50 years old
- Healthy and non-smoking
- Willing to use birth control
- Living within 300 miles of the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland
What does the study involve?
This study requires hospitalization at the NIH Clinical Center for approximately 1-2 weeks. You will return again for two outpatient study visits. During the hospitalization, doctors and nurses will see you daily. You will receive a single dose of RSV in your nose. You will also have blood tests and nasal rinses on a regular basis while you are in the hospital. You will remain in your room during your hospital stay, but there are no activity limitations after going home.
Where is the study taking place?
The study will take place at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. The NIH campus is accessible by car and public transportation. Transportation and other expenses may be covered for eligible participants.
How much does it cost?
