Recent surveillance data show that young persons in the United States are markedly affected by HIV. The 2009 HIV Surveillance Report, published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, revealed that the estimated number and estimated rate of annual diagnoses of HIV infection remained stable from 2006 through 2009 in the 40 states with mature, confidential, name-based HIV infection reporting. However, during this period, the estimated rates of diagnoses of HIV infection among persons aged 15–19 years increased 25%, and rates among persons aged 20–24 years increased 31%
