Influenza is a highly contagious airborne viral disease that occurs in seasonal epidemics and manifests as an acute febrile illness with variable degrees of systemic symptoms, ranging from mild fatigue to respiratory failure and death. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), influenza causes 3-5 million cases of severe illness and up to 650,000 deaths annually worldwide. The CDC estimates that flu-associated deaths in the US ranges from about 27,000 to 130,000 annually.
