Week 3: Increasing Awareness and Sharing a Message of Hope for People with Serious Mental Illness
It’s now Week 3 (May 11–17) of Mental Health Awareness Month. This week, the focus is on the challenges and resources for people living with serious mental illness (SMI) and serious emotional disturbance (SED), and their families and friends.
SMI refers to a diagnosis of one or more mental health conditions in adults that can severely interfere with the ability to do daily activities like working, going to school, or taking care of responsibilities.
Similarly, SED refers to a diagnosis of one or more mental health conditions in children or teens that substantially affects how they function at home, in school, or in the community.
These conditions are not uncommon. In 2023, 14.6 million adults 18 and older reported having an SMI over the past year, and an estimated 4.6 million children were diagnosed with SED. However, with early and consistent care and support, adults with SMI and children with SED can manage their conditions, overcome challenges, and thrive.
