Worrying evidence of COVID-19’s effect on the heart highlights the cruel wages of the disease — but should not be overblown, say researchers. The disease has yet to prove itself to be uniquely brutal to the cardiovascular system, although more research is needed. “It’s hard to find a balance,” says virologist Efraín Rivera-Serrano. “It’s not an apocalyptic zombie virus that’s so different from everything else and can suddenly do all these things to the body. But you also don’t want to trivialize what is happening.”
