Complementary Versus Alternative Medicine

Many Americans use medical treatments that are not part of mainstream, or conventional, medicine. These types of care, may be called “alternative” and “complementary.” These two words are often used interchangeably, but they actually refer to different things!
Complementary medicine is used together with conventional medical care. For example, a person with anxiety might see a psychiatrist for medication, a conventional practice, AND use biofeedback as a relaxation technique, a complementary practice.
Alternative medicine is used instead of conventional medical care. For instance, a person with chronic pain may see an acupuncturist to treat their symptoms, an alternative practice, instead of taking medication, a conventional practice.

Celiac Disease

Gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley, has a serious effect on people with celiac disease because it triggers an autoimmune response that can damage the small intestine. It may also be in other products like vitamins and supplements, hair and skin products, toothpastes, and lip balm. Learn more about celiac disease.

Healthy Aging

There are many ways to support healthy aging including eating healthy, keeping your mind active, getting physical activity, and playing an active role in your healthcare.
