Alaska: 2020 Virtual Forum on Intimate Partner Violence, Human Trafficking, and Domestic Violence

Monday, August 17, 2020 – Tuesday, August 18, 2020 from 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM PDT We have an exciting opportunity for you to participate in our 2020 Virtual Forum on Intimate Partner Violence, Human Trafficking, and Domestic Violence. During this webinar, participants will highlight promising practices, community resources, and social supports. Who can attend? Primary Care Behavioral Health Public Health Providers Community Organizations Practitioners Stakeholders Why should I attend? Increase knowledge of IPV and how it intersects with other public health issues, such as Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW), HT, and substance use disorder (SUD). Enhance understanding of the impacts of IPV on AI/AN communities. Develop awareness of Alaskan health care and community based organization interventions available to serve AI/ANs experiencing IPV and co-occurring public health issues, such as MMIW, HT, and SUD.  What topics will be covered? Presentation: HRSA Overview and IPV Toolkit Hear from HRSA subject matter experts on resources and tools available through HRSA programs to address IPV in primary care and community settings. Panel Discussion: Clinical Perspectives on IPV, HT, and DV Hear how providers use therapeutic relationships with patients to identify those at risk, make brief office interventions, offer continuity of care, and refer patients for subspecialty and community-based evaluation, treatment, and advocacy. In addition, learn more about cultural protective factors, and training programs that prepare clinicians to comprehensively identify and address IPV, HT, and DV. Panel Discussion: Federal, State, Local, and Tribal Resources to Protect Victims of IPV, HT, and Sexual Assault A brief overview of the AK unified court and law enforcement system and review of the impact of COVID-19 on IPV, HT, and Sexual Assault. Panelists will discuss differences between AK and lower 48 states; training and qualifications of VSPOs, TPOs, and responders; state processes for MMIW, IPV, HT; and geographical and resource differences within the state. Presentation: Intersections between IPV/HT/DV, Mental Health (MH) and SUD Discuss the intersections of IPV, MH, SUDs, promising practices for targeted interventions, and integrated approaches within primary care and other agency settings. Presentation: Data-Driven Intervention and Research on IPV, HT, and Sexual Assault Acknowledge the experience of victims, identify and highlight intervention points where victims can be reached, amplify community voices through data, define how widespread of a problem IPV, HT, and Sexual Assault are in AK, and, thereby, empower stakeholders and practitioners to see themselves as being able to make a difference.  Panel: Building Resiliency by Addressing Social Determinants of Health and Root Causes of IPV, HT, and DV The same social factors that shape health—including education, income and wealth, trauma, adverse childhood experiences, and related conditions where we live, learn, work and play—are strongly linked to IPV, HT, and DV. This panel will highlight AI/AN strengths and explore the ways in which social factors influence health and health-related behaviors and contribute to IPV, HT, and DV recovery and resilience. Panelists will focus on the links between IPV/HT/DV, health and social determinants to examine the health and social effects of violence on individuals and communities and explore strategies to prevent violence by addressing the root causes and social determinants of health.
