Bacterial transformation involves introducing foreign plasmid DNA into a bacterial call. Scientists use this to analyse bacteria, and for the storage and replication of the plasmid. DNA plasmids are usually designed to include a bacterial origin of replication (ORI) and an antibiotic resistance gene, to be used as a selection marker.
