Nitrogen removal by granular nitritation–anammox in an upflow membrane-aerated biofilm reactor

Highlights

Upflow membrane aerated biofilm reactor can treat low-strength nitrogen.
Nitritation–anammox is developed by gradually decreasing nitrite input.
The system achieves more than 80% removal of total nitrogen.
The observed NO3–N/NH4+–N ratio of 8% is below the “theoretical ratio” (13%).
Anammox bacteria are dominant in granules and Candidatus Jettenia is the primary genus.
