Severe storms threaten millions, could impact tent hospitals set up in fight against coronavirus

A severe storm system in the U.S. may bring a gust of winds that could threaten tent hospitals set up in the fight against the coronavirus. The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center said that "damaging wind gusts" may happen around midday Thursday in the Washington D.C. and New York City metro areas, while another batch of severe weather may target parts of Texas, impacting some 70 million people.

Meanwhile, a $250 billion urgent request to shore up a depleting small business fund failed to pass the Senate Thursday after Democrats objected to the measure pushed by the White House and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

This development came amid news that the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits swelled to 6.6 million last week, surging for the third consecutive week. But the Federal Reserve arguably overshadowed the grim news by rolling out its $2.3 trillion lending program to households and businesses, prompting a surge in the U.S. equity markets.

U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams told “Fox & Friends” that Americans must continue to follow the guidelines from the CDC and the White House on coronavirus for the country to be able to safely reopen its businesses. Still, a new study says that despite stay-at-home measures being successful in flattening the curve of the pandemic, any easing of restrictions could be counterintuitive prior to a vaccine being discovered.

And an American sailor onboard the coronavirus-stricken aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt is in the ICU at a military hospital on Guam, Fox News has learned. The sailor, who had tested positive for COVID-19 last month, was reportedly found unresponsive while in isolation. The number of sailors infected, meanwhile, has spiked 45 percent since Wednesday. Navy officials say 416 sailors aboard the Theodore Roosevelt have now tested positive for COVID-19.

Nonetheless, the Cook County Jail in Chicago is now considered the top American hot spot for coronavirus cases, exceeding the number of infections recorded aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt, a containment zone in New Rochelle, N.Y., and a nursing home in Kirkland, Wash., according to a report.

Multiple California counties are having trouble securing enough ventilators to handle an anticipated surge in coronavirus cases in their hospitals later this month, as Gov. Gavin Newsom ships hundreds of ventilators around the country.
