Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Health Matters for Women[TM] E-Newsletter Update

Situation Summary | CDC

New from CDC

CDC is responding to a pandemic of respiratory disease spreading from person-to-person caused by a novel (new) coronavirus. The disease has been named “coronavirus disease 2019” (abbreviated “COVID-19”). This situation poses a serious public health risk. The federal government is working closely with state, local, tribal, and territorial partners, as well as public health partners, to respond to this situation. COVID-19 can cause mild to severe illness; most severe illness occurs in older adults.

Data from the National Vital Statistics System reports, rates of vaginal birth after previous cesarean delivery (VBAC) increased 12.4% in 2016 to 12.8% in 2017 and 13.3% in 2018.

The report quantifies the impact of the inclusion of a pregnancy status checkbox item on the U.S. Standard Certificate of Death on the number of deaths classified as maternal.

This National Center for Health Statistics Health E-Stat provides information on changes in life expectancy at birth from 2010 through 2018 and the causes of death that contributed to the changes in life expectancy between 2014 and 2017, and between 2017 and 2018. From 2010 through 2014, life expectancy increased 0.2 years for the total population and increased 0.3 years for males and females.
