Increase in Human Anthrax Cases in Georgia Sparks Outbreak Investigation |

Skin ulcer caused by cutaneous anthrax |
While conducting an investigation on the incidence of anthrax in Georgia as part of my field epidemiology training, I noticed a sudden three-fold increase in human cases of cutaneous anthrax in the first months of 2012. Suspecting an outbreak, I alerted my FELTP director, and two U.S. CDC anthrax experts were dispatched to the Georgia National Center for Disease Control and Public Health (NCDC) to help with the investigation.
