NIAID Announces West African Regional Workshop on Protozoan Pathogens
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), a part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), has partnered with the Malaria Research and Training Center (MRTC) at the University of Bamako to convene a workshop to train West African graduate students and young scientists in basic and applied research on protozoan pathogens, including parasites that cause malaria and leishmaniasis. Outstanding students are invited to apply to attend the workshop being held March 19-30, 2012, in Bamako, Mali. Applications should be received no later than January 15, 2012.

The U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Malaria Research and Training Center (MRTC) at the University of Bamako will convene a special workshop focusing on Drugs & Drug Resistance. An international faculty will lead a two-week workshop from March 19-30 2012 in Bamako, Mali, to train graduate students and young scientists from West Africa in basic and applied research on protozoan pathogens, including malaria parasites and leishmaniasis.

Areas to be covered include:

  • Drugs
  • Drug Resistance
  • Functional Genomics and Bioinformatics
  • Host Immunity
  • Research Ethics
  • Biostatistics and Epidemiology
  • Molecular Biology
  • Developing Research Proposals
The workshop emphasizes student participation through symposia, poster sessions, roundtable discussions, hands-on laboratory sessions, mentored proposal development and informal interactions. The workshop organizers hope to generate interest in parasitic diseases research, to promote networks of African and international scientists and students, and to identify graduate students and young scientists who may be interested in graduate or postdoctoral training at research facilities in West Africa or overseas.
Outstanding students selected to participate will receive support for their travel, room and board.

Applications should be received no later than January 15, 2012 and need to be submitted in English. Applicants should include an abstract (1 page only) describing research that the student has performed or would like to perform in the future on some aspect of protozoan pathogens, as well as a CV (both in English).
