Nursing science symposium will conclude NINR’s 25th anniversary
Senator Daniel Inouye to be recognized for his outstanding commitment to nursing science
On Thursday, Oct. 13, 2011, the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) will conclude its 25th anniversary year commemoration by hosting a major nursing science symposium, Bringing Science to Life: A Healthier Tomorrow. This special event will bring together scientists from multiple disciplines, health care professionals, and members of the public to explore the contributions of nursing science to solving some of America’s most important health challenges. NINR, a component of the National Institutes of Health, is the primary federal agency for the support of nursing research.
“Over the last quarter century, NINR has led the development and use of science in shaping nursing practice,” said NINR Director Dr. Patricia A. Grady. “As we look to the future, the flow of fresh ideas and innovative science from nurse investigators will continue to make vital contributions to the American health care system.”
Dr. Rita Colwell, Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, will serve as the master of ceremonies. Keynote speakers include Dr. Karen Daley, president of the American Nurses Association, and Dr. Michael Gottesman, deputy director for intramural research at NIH. In addition, a scientific session and panel discussion will explore a range of topics relevant to nursing and health care.
NINR is pleased to announce that the Honorable Daniel K. Inouye, senior U.S. Senator from Hawaii and a long-time champion of nursing and nursing research, will be in attendance to receive a plaque of appreciation honoring his outstanding commitment to nursing science.
At the conclusion of the symposium, attendees are invited to participate in a guided poster tour presenting research from over 100 NINR-supported scientists at universities and research institutions across the country.
The symposium will also mark the release of NINR’s new publication, Bringing Science to Life: NINR Strategic Plan. Intended for researchers, clinicians, stakeholders, and the general public, the new strategic plan outlines the role that NINR-supported science can play in addressing the nation’s most pressing health and health care challenges, and details the institute’s strategic priorities for the conduct and support of scientific research over the next five years and beyond.
